Description:

The region of Jiangnan, which is the area around the mouth of the Yangtse River and further south is famous for its sizhu or silk and bamboo ensembles. Silk and bamboo refers to the materials the musical instruments are made from: silk for the stringed instruments, such as the erhu (two-stringed fiddle) and guzheng (zither) and bamboo for the wind instruments such as dizi (horizontal flute) and xiao (vertical flute). The region has a rich musical tradition including some world famous melodies such as “Zi Zhu Diao” (Purple Bamboo Melody) and “Jie Jie Gao” (Higher and Higher) which is said to be the melody that inspired Carl Maria von Weber in his incidental music for Gozzi’s Turandot and later by Paul Hindemith in his Symphonic Metamorphosis. We will also be dipping into the hauntingly beautiful music for the televised version of the classic Chinese novel “Dream of the Red Chamber”.

This is the ANU Chinese Classical Music Ensemble’s annual fund-raising concert which is supported by the Australia-China Friendship Society, ACT. Together we hope to raise funds for Project Hope in China (sponsoring poor children in rural areas to go to school) and the ensemble’s instrument fund to repair old instruments and buy new ones.

'It has been said that while Western music focussed on developing harmony, Chinese music focussed on melody. As a consequence Chinese music is unsurpassed in the beauty of its melodies. In this concert, the ensemble will present a program of music from across the length and breadth of this vast country and from the earliest times right up to a modern piece composed for the ensemble.'

Please note, the performance is free, however you are required to register at the link below.
